A Wine Worthy of Its Name: JBC 2023 Earns Top Honours

The Jan Boland Coetzee 2023 has once again affirmed Vriesenhof’s place among South Africa’s great estates, earning 95 points and a Top 10 position in the Prescient Cape Bordeaux Red Blend Report 2025.

This marks the second consecutive year that the JBC has received top recognition, a reflection of consistency, craftsmanship, and the enduring vision of the man whose name it carries.

A Wine of Depth and Distinction

Crafted from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc, the JBC 2023 captures the balance between power and poise that defines Stellenbosch’s finest Bordeaux-style reds.

Winemaker Adam Mason describes the wine as one that reveals depth, balance, and quiet strength with every sip, a red that feels timeless yet distinctly Vriesenhof.

Continuing a Legacy of Excellence

Named in honour of Jan Boland Coetzee, former Springbok and founding figure of Vriesenhof, this wine represents more than a blend. It is a continuation of his philosophy: “Wine is the environment. We can only care for it.”

Each vintage carries forward that belief, that great wines begin with respect for nature, patience in the cellar, and a deep understanding of the land.

From the Cellar in Paradyskloof

Nestled at the foot of Stellenbosch Mountain, the Vriesenhof cellar remains true to Jan’s vision of slow, thoughtful winemaking. Here, every barrel tells a story of place and season. The JBC 2023 is a perfect embodiment of that, structured yet supple, rich yet refined.

An Enduring Tribute

As we celebrate this accolade, we do so not only in recognition of a wine but in honour of a life’s work that continues to inspire.

The JBC 2023 is available exclusively from the Vriesenhof cellar, a wine to collect, to share, and to remember.
